Union Elevator Mechanic (Journeyman)
Position Summary
Elevator Mechanic responsible primarily for service, maintenance and repair of elevators, escalators, and other vertical transportation systems in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Service
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system issues.
- Maintain detailed service and maintenance records.
- Respond to service calls and emergency breakdowns (often on-call).
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and layout drawings.
- Install wiring, control systems, and electrical components.
Repair & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot complex systems (motors, brakes, controllers, hydraulics).
- Repair or replace defective components.
- Dismantle and rebuild equipment as needed.
- Work with computerized control systems and diagnostics tools.
Work Environment
- Works in elevator shafts, machine rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces.
- Frequently works at heights and with heavy equipment.
- May be required to work overtime or be on-call for emergencies.
- Strict adherence to safety standards and PPE is required.
Qualifications:
Required
- Completion of a union apprenticeship (typically 4–5 years).
- Equivalent non-union elevator experience.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read blueprints and technical diagrams.
- Ability to qualify for state/local elevator mechanic license.
