Staff Backend Engineer
Location: San Francisco Bay Area (in-office 3+ days per week)
Compensation: $220k – $270k base salary + equity
Role Overview
We are a fast-moving, early-stage company building the future of private markets. Our platform combines cutting-edge data pipelines, research tools, and modern trading infrastructure to give investors, shareholders, and brokers the technology they need to make smarter decisions and complete transactions seamlessly.
We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to take ownership of our backend systems, scale our data infrastructure, and help shape the technical direction of the company. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and wants to play a key part in building and scaling an ambitious product from the ground up.
What You’ll Do
- Architect and develop backend systems and APIs to power our data and trading platform.
- Build scalable, reliable pipelines to ingest, normalize, and enrich data from thousands of sources, including leveraging AI/LLMs to take our data systems to the next level.
- Drive the foundation for new AI-powered tools that automate workflows for investors and brokers.
- Break apart monolithic systems into event-driven services for speed, scalability, and clean abstractions.
- Partner with product and leadership to align technical execution with business priorities.
- Collaborate with the CTO to set backend best practices, establish coding standards, and mentor other engineers.
- Create internal monitoring and visibility tools for large-scale data pipelines.
- Contribute to engineering cost/time estimations that help guide the product roadmap.
About You
- Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, able to work in person at our office (Howard St) at least 3 days per week.
- 8+ years of backend-leaning or full-stack experience, ideally with recent time at an early-stage startup (Seed–Series A preferred).
- Highly productive: you code quickly without sacrificing quality, and you constantly improve your speed and developer workflow with modern AI tooling.
- Deep proficiency in TypeScript or a typed functional language (e.g., Scala, Rust, Haskell), and adaptable across languages.
- Proven track record of architecting systems and building codebases from scratch.
- Excited to take technical ownership and set direction for backend engineering.
- Natural mentor who leads by example, with openness to people leadership as the company grows.
- Thrive in a high-velocity environment, delivering extensible systems fast while maintaining quality.
- Proactive, pragmatic, and thoughtful, with a strong sense of ownership.
