Senior Instrument & Controls Technician
Location: Rochester, NY | Onsite (Direct Hire / Full Time)
Compensation: $40-$48 (Hourly / Non-Exempt) + Optional Overtime
Reports to: Manager, Information & Communications Technology
A highly specialized energy and utility infrastructure organization is seeking a Senior Instrument & Controls Technician to support and maintain critical industrial utility plant operations within one of the region’s most technically advanced industrial campuses.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced controls professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working across both legacy and modern industrial systems, and playing a hands-on role in maintaining critical infrastructure operations. The environment offers broad exposure to power generation, utilities, automation, instrumentation, and plant control systems in a highly visible and operationally critical role. The ideal candidate will bring strong troubleshooting ability, industrial controls expertise, and the ability to work collaboratively across operations, maintenance, engineering, and external vendor teams.

Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily work activities of the Instrumentation & Controls team
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial instrumentation and plant control systems
- Support PLC and Distributed Control System (DCS) hardware, software, and programming
- Calibrate and maintain instrumentation used to monitor pressure, flow, temperature, and analytical systems
- Troubleshoot pneumatic and electronic control devices, valves, dampers, and final control elements
- Modify and improve plant operating graphics and control configurations
- Coordinate contractors and field service providers supporting control system projects
- Support plant system reliability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain proper system access controls and physical security of critical equipment
Must-Have Qualifications
- 10+ years of industrial controls, instrumentation, or utility plant experience
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Experience supporting PLCs and Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and circuit diagrams
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude
- Experience working in industrial, utility, manufacturing, or power generation environments
- Familiarity with boilers, turbines, chillers, cooling towers, generators, and utility systems
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related technical field
- Experience with industrial networking technologies including copper and fiber systems
- Familiarity with Windows operating systems and industrial PC environments
- Experience supporting industrial automation upgrades and process improvements
