Job Title: CNC Gear Shaping Set-Up Technician
Location: Roscoe, IL
Department: Gear Cutting
The Opportunity
At our client, we specialize in the gears that others say are impossible to make. As a Gear Shaping Set-Up Technician, you will be the expert in producing high-precision internal and external gears, splines, and clusters. You will work with world-class equipment to produce components for the aerospace, defense, and high-performance racing industries, where "Excellence Without Exception" is our daily standard.
Key Responsibilities
-
Expert Setup: Perform complex setups on CNC Gear Shapers (such as Mitsubishi, Gleason, or Liebherr) and traditional mechanical shapers (such as Fellows).
-
Tooling Selection: Select and mount correct shaper cutters, ensuring proper stroke length, clearance, and "starting position" to avoid shoulder interference.
-
Calculations: Determine proper stroking speeds and feeds based on material hardness and tooth geometry.
-
Internal Gear Mastery: Execute high-precision internal gear cutting, ensuring concentricity and tooth thickness are held to micron-level tolerances.
-
First-Piece Inspection: Validate setups using Gear Inspection Centers (GMMs) and manual tools (over-pin measurements, verniers, and micrometers).
-
Troubleshooting: Diagnose and correct issues such as "taper," tooth spacing errors, or poor surface finish.
Technical Qualifications
-
Experience: 5+ years of experience in gear manufacturing, with a specific focus on Gear Shaping.
-
Geometric Proficiency: A deep understanding of involute gear geometry, including pressure angles, diametral pitch (DP), and module.
-
Mechanical Intuition: Ability to understand the reciprocating motion of the shaper and how it relates to the rotation of the workpiece.
-
Blueprint Expertise: Advanced ability to read complex engineering prints and GD&T, specifically gear-data tables.
-
Materials Knowledge: Experience shaping a variety of materials, including gear steels, stainless alloys, and aerospace-grade exotics.
