Software Engineering Intern

Part-Time • Remote • LA-Tech Internship Program

ABOUT HYEY

Hyey (hyeycare.com) is a caregiver coordination app built for the “sandwich generation,” the millions of working adults managing care for aging parents while maintaining their own careers and families. We were founded by two working women who lived this challenge firsthand, and we’re building the app we wished had existed. We’re a lean, mission-driven startup based in Los Angeles. Our app was built on a modern, full-stack JavaScript architecture, and we’re now in beta with real families. This is an early-stage opportunity to make a meaningful, visible contribution to a product people genuinely need.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern to work directly with our founding & technical team on the product. The focus of this role is primarily frontend, with exposure to backend and data work. You’ll be fixing bugs, improving flows, and helping us ship small features as we learn from real users. You don't need to know our entire stack on day one; just bring strong JavaScript and React fundamentals and be curious,

communicate well, and pick things up quickly.

If you've ever had to explain a technical decision to a non-engineer and actually enjoyed it, you'll fit right in here.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

App Maintenance & Bug Fixes

  • Triage and resolve bugs identified during initial user testing of our app
  • Ensure stability across our core screens and user flows
  • Document issues and fixes clearly so the codebase stays maintainable

Feature Development

  • Collaborate with founders to scope and build new features as user feedback comes in
  • Improve existing app flows for clarity, speed, and ease of use
  • Write clean, readable code with an eye toward future scalability

UX & Design Improvements

  • Identify friction points in the user flow and implement fixes
  • Improve visual consistency and responsiveness across devices
  • Collaborate with founders on layout and interaction decisions; good instincts and a willingness to iterate matter more than a design background

Website:

  • Assist with basic technical SEO improvements (page speed, meta tags, sitemap) Security & Privacy
  • Help strengthen security basics for an app that handles sensitive family and health information: reviewing database access rules, keeping dependencies up to date, and documenting how user data moves through the app

Our Stack

  • Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript
  • Backend: Node.js via Next.js API routes
  • Database: Firebase Firestore
  • Authentication: Firebase Authentication
  • AI: Google Gemini API
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Version Control: Git / GitHub
  • Mobile: Expo (React Native)

What You Bring

  • Strong JavaScript and React fundamentals, curiosity, clear communication, and the ability to pick things up quickly
  • Some experience working with APIs and databases
  • Comfort with Git and basic version control workflows
  • A debugging mindset — you ask "why" before you ask "how do I fix it"

DETAILS

  • Location: Remote
  • Hours: 15-20hrs/week
  • Duration: 8-10 weeks
  • Compensation: $18.42/hr
  • Start Date: ASAP

Equal Opportunity Employer

We value diversity, equity, and inclusion at Hyey. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We encourage all to apply — you will be welcomed and included as a valued member of our team.
