Engineering Intern

Moby Filters | Summer

Moby builds filtration systems that capture microplastics and pollutants from commercial laundry wastewater. You will work directly with our technical team on the current prototype build, from bench to pilot site.

What You Will Learn

• How a hardware product moves from concept to working prototype to a system running at a real customer site
• Design review practice: how to present your work, take critique, and revise
• CAD workflow in a production setting, including drawing standards and revision control
• Prototyping and fabrication technique in the shop, with training on tools you have not used before
• Sensor integration and basic embedded controls on Raspberry Pi, including wiring, calibration, and troubleshooting
• How test data is collected, logged, and used to make design decisions
• What field installation and maintenance actually require, by joining site visits
• How a small startup team makes tradeoffs across technical goals, timelines, and budget

Key Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of new products from concept to launch, under the direction of a supervising engineer
• Create 3D models, prototypes, and test samples using CAD software, with review and feedback on each iteration
• Fabricate, assemble, and iterate on prototype hardware in the shop
• Wire and test sensors and Raspberry Pi based controls with guidance from the technical team
• Support product testing and validation activities, log results, and flag issues
• Help develop and maintain product specifications, drawings, and technical documentation
• Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on design iterations
• Join on-site pilot installation and maintenance visits
• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure products meet technical specifications, timelines, and budgets
• Conduct research on market trends, customer needs, and the competitive landscape
• Conduct customer discovery interviews and surveys

Required Skills

• Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
• Comfortable with hand tools and shop work; you have built physical things before
• Familiarity with product design and development processes, particularly the human-centered design approach
• Coursework or working knowledge of materials science and manufacturing processes
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Curiosity and willingness to learn; we care more about how quickly you pick things up than what you already know

Preferred Skills

• Experience with rapid prototyping tools (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters)
• Some exposure to Python or embedded hardware (Raspberry Pi, sensors)
• Experience with product testing and validation activities
• Exposure to design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles
• Experience in maker spaces and labs

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in Engineering, Design, Sustainable Development, or a related field
• Previous internship, coursework project, or club or team experience in product design and development is preferred
• Strong academic record

Mentorship and Structure

• Direct pairing with a mechanical engineer on the prototype build
• Weekly check-ins on progress, plus feedback on your work in design reviews
• A defined project of your own by the end of the internship, something you can point to and explain
• Exposure to the full team, including product, controls, and business development

LA County Subsidy Eligible Position Information 

Subsidy roles require students to have an LA County based address, and be between the ages of 18-24 years old. Once you are placed in a subsidy eligible position you will be required to present the following documents to processed in a Youth Center (AJCC):

• Identification (School or State ID).
• Social Security Card (Please ensure that it is signed).
• Birth Certificate.
• Proof of Los Angeles County Residency, including a postmarked date (Report Card, Transcripts, or any mail that is under the applicant’s name).
• Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination OR valid medical/religious exemption.
• The Youth Center (AJCC) will be paying you for 160 completed hours.
• You will be required to submit timesheets to your youth center (AJCC) to be paid for your time worked.

NOTE: IF YOU WERE ALREADY PLACED IN A SUBSIDY ELIGIBLE POSITION, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO QUALIFY FOR ANOTHER SUBSIDY ELIGIBLE POSITION UNTIL JULY 1ST, 2027.
