Our client is a well-established, locally owned general contracting firm with a 25+ year track record delivering commercial and residential construction projects throughout Iowa. Known for quality workmanship and long-standing client relationships, they are adding a Senior Accountant to their close-knit finance team as the company continues to grow.
The Role
This is a high-impact, broad-scope position at the center of the company's financial operations. You'll own project cost accounting, lead month-end close, support payroll, and handle compliance — working closely with project managers, the Controller, and ownership. The right person brings construction industry fluency and thrives in a lean environment where their work is visible and meaningful.
What You'll Do
Project & Job Cost Accounting
- Maintain and monitor job cost reports, tracking costs against budget and flagging variances
- Process subcontractor invoices, owner billings, and lien waivers
- Partner with project managers on cost coding and WIP schedule accuracy
- Track change orders, contract modifications, and over/under-billed positions
General Ledger & Month-End Close
- Execute monthly close — journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and intercompany accounts
- Maintain fixed asset schedules, depreciation entries, and equipment cost tracking
- Prepare monthly financial statements and provide variance analysis to leadership
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Oversee A/P processing for vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Monitor A/R aging, follow up on outstanding invoices, and coordinate collections
- Review and approve employee expense reports for policy compliance
Payroll & Compliance
- Support bi-weekly payroll including certified payroll for prevailing wage projects
- Prepare Iowa sales/use tax returns, withholding filings, and regulatory reports
- Coordinate with external CPA on annual audit/review; manage 1099 and W-2 reconciliation
- Maintain bonding, insurance, and contractor licensing compliance records
Team & Process
- Identify and implement workflow improvements that increase efficiency and accuracy
- Mentor junior accounting staff and provide backup coverage
- Support Controller on special projects, forecasting, and budgeting
What You Bring
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3–7 years of accounting experience; 2+ in construction or project-based industry preferred
- Solid grasp of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion
- AIA billing (G702/G703) and lien waiver experience
- Proficiency in Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Foundation, or comparable software
- Strong Excel skills and working knowledge of GAAP
- Organized, deadline-driven, and detail-oriented
Preferred
- Familiarity with Iowa contractor licensing, bonding, and insurance
- Experience supporting external audits
- Comfortable wearing multiple hats in a lean, owner-operated environment
