The New York City Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NYC YRBS) is a citywide initiative sponsored by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The survey asks students in grades 6–12 about behaviors and experiences that impact their health and well-being, including mental health, diet and exercise, tobacco and alcohol use, other drug use, and other health-related behaviors.

The survey will be conducted in approximately 130 public middle and high schools across all five boroughs of New York City. The results will help monitor trends in student health behaviors, evaluate state and local prevention efforts, and improve school health education policies and programs.

About the Role

We are seeking dependable, professional, and detail-oriented individuals to serve as Data Collectors during Fall 2026. Data Collectors will administer a standardized paper-and-pencil survey to students in selected classes at participating NYC public schools.

This is a temporary position expected to run from September through December 2026. Data Collectors may work up to 5 days per week for approximately 8–10 weeks and must be available full-time throughout the survey period. Assignments will be provided at least 5 days in advance.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer paper-and-pencil surveys to students in selected NYC public middle and high schools.
• Follow standardized survey administration and data collection procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality and protect student privacy throughout the survey process.
• Communicate with assigned schools in advance of survey administration visits.
• Record and submit daily school participation rates using an online system.
• Communicate regularly with your supervisor regarding assignments and school visits.
• Transport survey materials to and from assigned school locations.
• Assist with recruitment visits and material drop-off/pick-up as needed.
• Identify potential issues during school visits and recommend appropriate solutions.
• Participate in mandatory, in-person training on September 29–30, 2026.

Position Requirements

• Full-time availability during the survey period, with the ability to work up to 5 days per week.
• Access to the internet for entering daily school participation rates and receiving assignments.
• Personal email and cell phone for communication with your supervisor.
• Cell phone access to contact assigned schools prior to survey administration visits.
• Ability to pass a background screening.
• Successful completion of mandatory, in-person 2-day training on September 29–30, 2026.
• Professional appearance and demeanor.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort speaking in front of groups.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt to unexpected situations.
• Strong organizational skills and punctuality, particularly in the mornings; scheduled arrival times may be as early as 6:00 a.m.
• Ability to lift and carry survey supplies weighing up to 25 lbs.
• Basic technological literacy.

Preferred Experience

• Experience in field data collection or survey research.
• Experience working with adolescents or teens, particularly in a school setting.
• Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
• PETS clearance preferred.
• Experience working independently in field-based or school environments.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Training

Data Collectors are required to attend a mandatory, in-person 2-day training on September 29–30, 2026, in Midtown Manhattan.

Training is paid at your regular hourly rate for 16 hours. Upon successful completion of training, school assignments will begin in late September and continue until all participating schools have been surveyed.

Compensation & Reimbursement

Pay Rate: $21/Hour

• Training: Paid at your hourly rate for 16 hours of mandatory training.
• School Data Collection Visits: Paid for 12 hours per school visit.
• Recruitment Visits: Paid for 4 hours per recruitment visit.
• Material Drop-off/Pick-up: Paid for 2 hours per visit.
• Mileage Reimbursement: $0.725 per mile when using your personal vehicle for work-related travel.
• Additional Expenses: Work-related tolls and parking are reimbursed.

Our goal is for Data Collectors to visit approximately 2–3 schools per week during the data collection period. However, the number and frequency of assignments will ultimately depend on participating school schedules and availability, so a specific number of weekly visits cannot be guaranteed.
