Responsibilities

Perform accounting tasks related to the efficient maintenance and processing of General Ledger transactions.

Key functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Prepare and post assigned monthly journal entries, including cash activity, direct/assumed/ceded premiums and losses, expense accruals, intercompany expenses, expense allocations, and other related entries.
  2. Prepare and distribute the monthly budget variance report.
  3. Prepare and reconcile reinsurance accounting entries and accounts for premium and loss activity.
  4. Maintain the fixed asset system and post monthly depreciation expense.
  5. Perform monthly bank, intercompany, and other account reconciliations.
  6. Provide support for statistical reporting requests as required.
  7. Produce, analyze, and distribute various monthly reports and reconciliations, including storm reports, LAE summary reports, accrual reports, investment allocations, and other related reports.
  8. Assist with the processing and analysis of agent incentive contracts and agent profit-sharing payments.
  9. Assist with the annual budgeting process.
  10. Assist with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) testing.
  11. Administer the unclaimed property system and provide required reporting to appropriate state agencies.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller or CFO.

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree in Accounting, or a combination of education and commensurate experience.
  • Five years of accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years of P&C Insurance experience
  • Proficiency with personal computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and AP/GL systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

Performance Objectives

  • Close the monthly books within 5 business days by reconciling premiums, losses, and reinsurance for assigned lines, with variance explanations ready for leadership review.
  • Deliver quarterly statutory and GAAP reporting packages that pass internal and external audit with zero material adjustments.
  • Identify and quantify reserve and premium trends that exceed 5% of plan; present root-cause analysis and recommended actions to finance and underwriting within 10 days of close.
  • Automate at least two recurring reconciliations or reports per quarter using existing Excel/SQL tools, cutting cycle time by 20% without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Partner with claims and underwriting to validate large-loss and catastrophe data so IBNR and case reserves remain within actuarial ranges.
  • Support annual audits and rating-agency submissions by providing complete workpapers and answering inquiries within 48 hours.
