We are working with a top rated Life, Health and Voluntary Benefits carrier who is looking to hire an experienced Underwriting Manager to lead the Group Voluntary Benefits Underwriting team (Part of the Worksite Division). This role reports to the VP of Underwriting and will be in line to move to the Director level with Success. You will lead, manage and direct the day to day activities of the team, coach, train and develop the staff of mostly experienced sr level Underwriters. Our client will also look to you to personally handle high value or complex cases. You will help to establish and implement best practices, lead workflow and process improvement initiatives. You will also help to establish a culture of accountability related to KPIs and foster a collaborative team-based environment. The team is all remote and this position can also be remote.  

In order to be considered for this position you must have a minimum of 7 years Group Underwriting experience, Life/Health and Voluntary Benefit (DI, CI, AD&D) product expertise and at least 2 years leading or Managing a team.  

Responsibilities include:
  • Manage, coach and develop your team (performance reviews, 1 on 1 coaching, reporting, etc.)
  • Oversee underwriting guidelines and practices for Group Life/Health, accident, critical illness and disability while ensuring consistency, accuracy, and profitability.
  • Personally underwrite and approve select complex or strategic cases
  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to junior underwriters
  • Work closely with the sales team, product team, and operations teams to deliver client focused solutions that align with profitability goals
  • Establish and monitor underwriting guidelines, best practices, and performance metrics
  • Lead initiatives designed to improve efficiency, strengthen risk assessment, and support business strategies
  • Handle escalations for complex underwriting questions or negotiations

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7+ years of group underwriting experience
  • Minimum 2+ years in a team leadership or management role
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Group voluntary benefits, health, and life insurance products
  • Proven ability to make financial and risk decisions that support company strategy
  • Strong ability to coach and train junior underwriters, and develop future talent
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Proven proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other analytical tools
