Surety Advisor

Contractors and project owners do not need another quote. They need a surety advisor who can read the work, the balance sheet, and the contract—and put a bond program in place that actually lets the job proceed. In this role you will own that outcome: stronger bonding capacity, cleaner submissions, and clients who stay because the advice held up when the project got hard.

Performance Objectives

  • Build and retain a book of contractor and project clients by delivering bond programs that match backlog, working capital, and contract terms—not a generic limit.
  • Qualify prospects and existing accounts early, so producers pursue work the market can support and the agency does not chase unfit submissions.
  • Prepare complete underwriting packages and negotiate bid, performance, and payment bonds with surety markets so clients receive competitive terms on time.
  • Advise clients on contract insurance requirements, indemnity, and job-cost exposure before they sign, reducing last-minute bond failures and coverage gaps.
  • Partner with account managers and claims on renewals, endorsements, and troubled jobs so service stays urgent, accurate, and documented to agency standards.
  • Grow the relationship beyond the bond: identify related property, liability, and executive-benefit needs and bring in the right internal specialist.
  • Keep carrier appetites, rate platforms, and market conditions current, and translate that knowledge into clear recommendations clients can act on.

Environment & Resources

You will sit with a collaborative team of business-insurance specialists in Charlotte, partnering daily with producers and account managers. Work runs through Applied Epic (or equivalent agency management), carrier portals, and Microsoft Office. You will have direct access to surety underwriters and internal subject-matter support across construction, real estate, and professional risk. This is a full-time client-facing role with room to shape how surety is marketed and serviced.

Essential Qualifications

  • Recent surety or construction-account experience advising contractors on bonding capacity, contract review, and renewal strategy.
  • A current Property & Casualty license, or the ability to secure and maintain one; a surety or construction designation (or active pursuit of one) is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to assemble underwriting submissions, negotiate with surety markets, and explain terms without jargon.
  • Discipline with expiration lists, documentation, and agency procedures, plus intermediate-to-advanced Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Judgment, discretion, and a service standard that treats client questions with urgency—not a handoff.

Why This Role

  • Surety is practiced as advice, not a transaction: you counsel on risk, contracts, and program design alongside producers.
  • Specialists across business insurance, high-net-worth, and risk sit close enough to cross-serve complex clients without a bureaucracy.
  • A growing book and an entrepreneurial culture reward people who improve the process, not just follow it.
  • Education is expected—designations, carrier meetings, and market study are part of the job, not an afterthought.
