Compensation & Incentives

  • Base Salary Range: $35-45/hour


Position Summary

The Surplus Lines Tax Specialist is responsible for managing and processing surplus lines tax filings, payments, and reconciliations across multiple states in accordance with regulatory requirements. This role ensures compliance with state surplus lines laws, carrier agreements, and internal controls while supporting accurate and timely premium tax reporting.

The position requires strong attention to detail, working knowledge of surplus lines regulations, and the ability to manage multiple filings and deadlines in a fast-paced wholesale insurance environment.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare, file, and remit surplus lines tax filings and payments across multiple states and jurisdictions
  • Ensure accurate calculation and allocation of surplus lines taxes, stamping fees, and assessments
  • Reconcile surplus lines tax payments to premium and policy data
  • Monitor filing deadlines and maintain compliance calendars to ensure timely submissions
  • Coordinate with surplus lines associations, stamping offices, carriers, and internal teams to resolve discrepancies
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation to support audits and regulatory reviews
  • Assist with internal and external audits related to surplus lines tax compliance
  • Stay current on changes to state surplus lines laws, tax rates, and filing requirements
  • Support process improvements and automation initiatives to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Partner with accounting, operations, and underwriting teams to ensure data integrity


Position-Specific Skills & Qualifications

Work Experience

  • 3–6+ years of experience in surplus lines tax processing, insurance accounting, or compliance, preferably within a wholesale insurance, MGA/MGU, or brokerage environment
  • Hands-on experience with multi-state surplus lines filings and stamping offices
  • Experience working with agency management systems and surplus lines tax platforms preferred

Professional Licensing / Certifications

  • No insurance license required
  • Surplus lines compliance or tax-related certifications preferred but not required

Essential Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of surplus lines tax regulations and state-specific requirements
  • High attention to detail with strong reconciliation and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and jurisdictions simultaneously
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective communication skills with internal teams and external agencies
  • Proficiency in Excel and financial systems
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred
  • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
