Job Title: Senior Manager, Networking and Systems Engineering

Role Overview

We are partnering with an established organization seeking a highly technical Senior Manager of Networking and Systems Engineering to architect, build, and maintain the backbone of its IT infrastructure. Reporting to senior IT leadership, this person will lead the engineering team responsible for the organization's network fabric, virtualization stack, and core computing environment.

While security is a component of every IT role, the primary mandate for this position is operational excellence — ensuring high availability, robust system performance, and seamless connectivity. This person will serve as the technical authority on switching, routing, and virtualization strategy, ensuring the technology stack supports the organization's growth and day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

Network Architecture & Engineering

  • Manage and configure a multi-vendor switching infrastructure (Juniper switches for the storage network, Cisco switches for the general network), ensuring optimal routing, VLAN management, and throughput for high-performance applications
  • Manage and optimize the edge network and firewall rulesets across multi-vendor environments (SonicWall, Fortinet, Cisco), focusing on traffic flow, bandwidth optimization, and site-to-site VPN reliability
  • Utilize monitoring and observability platforms (e.g., LogicMonitor, Splunk) to proactively monitor network health, bandwidth usage, and latency, and resolve bottlenecks before they impact users

Systems Engineering & Virtualization

  • Serve as lead architect for the VMware environment; manage ESXi hosts, vCenter, resource pools, and datastores to ensure maximum uptime and performance
  • Oversee configuration and maintenance of network-attached storage arrays and managed file transfer systems, ensuring data accessibility and integrity
  • Manage the lifecycle of the Windows environment (endpoints and server backend), including patch management infrastructure to ensure system stability and consistency
  • Manage the lifecycle of the Linux environment (server backend), including repository and patch management infrastructure

Disaster Recovery & Reliability

  • Engineer and test backup solutions (e.g., Veeam); ensure RPO/RTO objectives are met and regularly validate restoration procedures for critical systems
  • Design systems with no single point of failure, planning for high availability in both network topology and server clustering

Identity & Access Operations

  • Support the operational side of Identity Management (e.g., Okta and related tooling), ensuring seamless user provisioning, SSO integration, and directory synchronization
  • Oversee access controls and user lifecycle management to ensure employees have appropriate access without friction

Operational Security & Compliance Support

  • Collaborate with the Security team to implement infrastructure controls (e.g., endpoint protection deployment via group policy, vulnerability remediation)
  • Assist in maintaining the technical accuracy of the organization's risk register and support relevant regulatory and compliance controls from an implementation perspective

General Responsibilities

  • Own the lifecycle of technical documentation, ensuring up-to-date architectural diagrams, API references, and design documents
  • Act as technical lead and solution architect for new projects, making decisions on design patterns, scalability, and component structure
  • Partner closely with other engineering teams and organizational leaders to ensure technical alignment, resolve dependencies, and support a cohesive engineering culture

Education & Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master's degree not required but a plus)
  • 7+ years of experience in IT infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on network engineering and systems administration
  • Previous management or team lead experience required, including 5+ years managing a network and/or systems engineering team (hiring and performance management included)
  • Expert-level knowledge of Layer 2/3 networking (VLANs, STP, OSPF/BGP) and virtualization technologies
  • Strong business sensibility applied to technical decisions, ensuring designs are justifiable, pragmatic, and fit for purpose

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise network hardware (Cisco, Juniper) and firewall platforms (SonicWall, Fortinet, Cisco)
  • Experience with VMware vSphere and enterprise virtualization environments
  • Experience managing Windows Server/Desktop environments and patch management tooling
  • Experience with NAS/storage platforms and managed file transfer solutions
  • Experience with monitoring/observability and backup platforms (e.g., LogicMonitor, Splunk, Veeam)
  • Experience with identity and access management platforms (e.g., Okta)
  • Preferred certifications: CCNP (Cisco) or JNCIP (Juniper); VCP (VMware Certified Professional); MCSE or equivalent Microsoft infrastructure certification; RHCE, LPIC, or CompTIA Linux

Why Our Client

  • Build technology that makes a meaningful, day-to-day impact on the community
  • Enjoy the stability of a mission-driven organization while solving technically challenging problems
  • Exceptional work-life balance with a four-day workweek and alternating Fridays off
