Who Are You?
The Technology Refurbishment Intern is a detail-oriented technical role that combines electronics knowledge with compliance and safety awareness. This position requires proficiency in diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, adherence to data security standards, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Success depends on precision, accountability, and continuous improvement to ensure devices are effectively refurbished for donation or resale.
This hands-on role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and strict attention to data security and safety protocols. By refurbishing devices to meet functional and cosmetic standards, the associate maximizes the value of donated technology, contributing directly to Human-I-T’s mission of advancing digital equity and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate donated electronics to determine condition, functionality, and potential reuse.
- Use diagnostic software to test components, document results, and recommend next steps.
- Install replacement parts and perform repairs to restore functionality and appearance.
- Troubleshoot hardware issues and collaborate with team members on complex repairs.
- Stay updated on new diagnostic tools, repair methods, and industry trends.
- Wipe or destroy data from storage devices in compliance with NIST 800-88 and NAID AAA standards.
- Document all data sanitization processes and maintain repair records.
- Follow safety protocols and use PPE as required.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training in IT repair or electronics is a plus. CompTIA A+ certification or similar technical qualification is highly preferred.
Experience
- Proven experience in electronics repair, IT hardware, or related fields. Experience with diagnostic tools, testing software, and repair techniques for computers, laptops, and other electronic devices.

Work Context
